The Clinician's Master Class: Breakthroughs in Executive Functioning Using Advanced Strategies That Stick

presenter photo

Speaker: Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC/SLP

This advanced training will provide an overview of the latest research developments in the field of executive functioning, and will guide clinicians through a series of practical, hands-on strategies to translate these developments into meaningful interventions with students and clients. This class assumes proficiency in the use of executive functioning interventions at the basic level. Clinicians will participate in exercises, demonstrations, and simulations of therapeutic strategies targeted at EF challenges such as situational awareness, visualizing and planning goals (including complex academic assignments), and visualizing and managing time (including for projects with extended time horizons). Our primary focus will be on best practices for refining the therapeutic scaffolding of mental imagery and self-directed talk to guide clients toward greater independence.

Learning Outcomes:

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • State the functional working definition of what is meant by the term "executive function skills" as it pertains to theraputic interventions
  • Describe the typical developmental course of the executive functioning skills
  • Define how situational awareness, self-talk, forethought, gesture/movement, and episodic memory are the foundational skills for successful task execution
  • Develop an intervention program to foster a student's ability to form more independent executive function skills by describing theraputic activities to improve the following: situational awareness, self-talk and forethought; self-regulation and following routines and how to transition within and between tasks; task planning, task initiation and completion; active self-management of the factors related to the passage of time; student management of materials

Coaching ADHD:
Using the secrets of world class athletes to help your clients reach their potential

Presented by: Sarah Cheyette, MD

February 26, 2022

Do you want the power of the Olympic coaches to help bring forth your client’s best performance?  This workshop on ADHD will demystify this complex subject and give you actionable steps to help both you—and your clients—feel empowered.  ADHD comes up in the diagnosis and management of educational issues. While the term has been around for a long time, the understanding of it as well as societal views on it continue to evolve.  Learn about the evolving nature of ADHD — the biology behind it, its associated educational issues, and changing societal views. Dr. Cheyette will inspire you to take a fresh look at ADHD and how it affects your clients’ thinking, learning, and self-esteem.

Attendess will be able to:

  1. Explain what ADHD is and how it is similar to and different from a “learning disability.”
  2. Describe some of the neuroanatomy and neurochemistry of ADHD
  3. Define two principles of coaching
  4. Name and compare two different types of medications for ADHD
